The Nitrox Gas Blender course is open to anyone, aged over 18. It’s a practical way to get non-divers involved in the club, especially if they have family members who dive. No diving qualification is necessary to take part.

The Mixed Gas Blender course is open to anyone who has passed the Nitrox Gas Blender practical assessment (or who holds equivalent certification from another agency).

Your next steps – developing your skills

Getting regular practice at gas blending will maintain your confidence.

After this course you could develop specific skills to expand your interests further, whether you are a diving member or non-diving member. Imagine being qualified in diver first aid or becoming a boat handler. Check out the Skill Development Courses (SDCs) you can get involved in.

Explorer Mixed Gas Diver (60m)

Explorer Mixed Gas Diver (60m)

BSAC’s Explorer Mixed Gas Diver (60m) course is a great way to extend your existing open-circuit mixed gas diving skills to 60m.

You will learn how to dive with a travel gas to optimise your breathing mix at all stages of the dive. The course complements the Sports Mixed Gas Diver (50m) course and students with suitable experience and skills can combine the two in one event.

I was looking for my next challenge, to dive 50-60m wrecks and be confident using trimix and travel gas to get to the sites I wanted to explore. This is a thorough course that equips you to do just that and has opened up some fantastic diving opportunities for me.

Explorer Mixed Gas Diver introduces a Sport Mixed Gas Diver (50m) to the use of a travel gas to support diving with normoxic trimix, and qualifies them to dive such mixes to depths of up to 60m using a twin-set and two stage cylinders.

To enrol on the Explorer Mixed Gas Diver Course you must be at least 18 years old and have already successfully completed a Sport Mixed Gas Diver (50m) course (or have equivalent certification from another recognised training agency).

You should be proficient at deeper diving, with 30 or more logged dives in the 30m to 50m range and have dived to 30m or deeper in the 4 weeks leading up to this course.

After completing Explorer Mixed Gas Diver (60m) and consolidating your skills, your options for deeper expedition diving significantly expands.

BSAC Advanced Mixed Gas Diver (80m)

BSAC Advanced Mixed Gas Diver (80m)

The Advanced Mixed Gas Diver course is a great way to extend already considerable open-circuit mixed gas diving skills.

The course considers the detailed theory and practice of the decompression strategies needed to dive safely to 80 metres.

I really enjoyed this course and using the decompression theory and practice to extend my range to 80m. I now have the confidence to use all the gas mixes at my disposal to plan a significantly deep dive.

Advanced Mixed Gas Diver (80m) course is the ultimate step in BSAC open-circuit mixed-gas training. It introduces a Sport Mixed Gas Diver (50m) or Explorer Mixed Gas Diver (60m) to diving with an extended choice of trimix gases, and qualifies them to dive such mixes to depths of up to 80m, using a twin-set and a minimum of two stage cylinders.

To enrol on the Advanced Mixed Gas Diver (80m) course you must be at least 18 years old and be a Sports Diver with 35m depth certification. You also need to have completed a Sport Mixed Gas Diver (50m) course, an Extended Range Diver course (a BSAC legacy qualification) or have equivalent certification from another recognised training agency. You should be very proficient at deeper diving, with say 100 or more logged dives.

If you are already an Explorer Mixed Gas Diver(60m) some of the course elements are discretionary.

As an Advanced Mixed Gas Diver (80m), having consolidated your open-circuit deep diving skills, you will be a valuable member of any expedition team. You may decide to further your diving in other ways.

BSAC CCR Diver (40m)

CCR Diver (40m)

BSAC’s CCR Diver (40m) training is your first step into the silent world of rebreather diving. It’s a great way to learn the basics about closed-circuit rebreathers.

I had been considering moving to rebreather diving for some time, and after completing this course I wish I had done it sooner! It’s a solid introduction to CCR and has opened up a whole new route of bubble-free, reduced deco diving that I will continue to explore.

- Rob Jackson, Plymouth Sound SAC

The CCR Diver (40m) course teaches a qualified open-circuit diver to dive either an AP Diving rebreather – Evolution, Evolution+ or Inspiration – or a Poseidon Se7en. You will get a thorough grounding in rebreather technology, alongside unit-specific training, and learn how to adapt your existing diving skills to a new world where you benefit from always breathing an optimum gas mix.

To enrol on the CCR Diver (40m) course you must have successfully completed a BSAC Sports Diver course with 35-metre depth certification, and have at least 50 logged dives. You also need to be an Accelerated Decompression Diver or Advanced Nitrox Diver (or have equivalent certification from another recognised training agency).

Your next steps – developing your skills

After completing a CCR Diver (40m) course and consolidating your skills, your options for club diving significantly expands.

  • You could progress to Sport Mixed Gas CCR Diver (50m) and enjoy the benefits of reduced gas density and narcosis that using trimix as a diluent brings, bringing greater comfort and enjoyment at extended depths of up to 50m.
  • You could develop specific skills to expand your diving interests further, including technical and logistical courses such as Explorer Mixed Gas CCR Diver (60m), Advanced Mixed Gas CCR Diver (80m), Compressor Operation and Mixed Gas Blender. Check out the Skill Development Courses (SDCs) you can get involved in.
  • You could sign up for BSAC’s Instructor Foundation Course (IFC) to start your instructing journey with BSAC.
  • Already an Open Water Instructor? You could develop your existing skills to become a Technical Instructor.
